It's not that I'm unable to commit to the collage. I see infinite collages. At least, until I'm bored. Then I'm over it and don't even want to memorialize them by gluing them. These are photos of the parts. Lots and lots of photos. These aren't necessarily the best. Just the ones I looked at today.

The first day of class I was vibrating. I over achieved. Instead of one collage, a study of value, I ended up with 5. Torn newspaper, separated by black and white value, then assembled. I copied them on matte and glossy...3 of each, so I could then embellish without feeling that I would "use them up". Have plenty. now what...this is one using watercolor and gesso...or no gesso.

This year we celebrate with 4 live bands at the New Hard Rock Cafe in Waikiki. $5 parking at the Ft Derussy Post office, or $2 for 4 hours at Royal Hawaiian Shopping center with purchase at any store in the complex.

Pam Yee was back in town w/DH...and played up a storm! She led a repousse' chunky book using stamps & aluminum to decorate rounded corner 4x4 masonite front & back cover. Several weeks later, she and Debbie West, treated us to an all day workshop at Rubber Stamp Plantation. They were full up this year for the 2 book projects that everyone walked away with.

Pam led a sewn book using a single parent sheet of watercolor paper that she pre colored & split for sharing.

Debbie's project was a steampunk journal that made me drool for my father's work bench!

Surf amazing at Ho'okipa, Maui. One of my favorite places to park myself. surfers, kite boarders, windsurfers... used to harvest ogo for my garden when I lived in Haiku. If you're in the area, be sure to have dinner at Max World Bistro. Truly a gem and well worth the adventure finding it!

Easiest of methods...We used lots of perfumey/stinky old fashion cheap shaving cream & whatever little ink bottles were lying around that were driving me crazy. Was able to lay quite a few to rest! Always satisfying to finally burn through some of the supplies that keep accumulating. Don't know why they multiply!

One evening, Kristen & children, Precilla, Debbie, Darrell, Katie, Mary, David & I unpacked, numbered, labeled, cataloged, & photographed (then repacked) 80 bras. Took us an astounding 3 1/2 hours. Well oiled machine! we learned to keep all the paper work with the corresponding bra until the very end! fun matching names with bras!

I'm tickled. Another surface has yet to escape me! Shopping at home depot for hose clamps, netting with blue glass bathroom tile threw itself upon me. I dragged it home thinking I would etch it with Tropical Etch glass etching stencils. I heard Miami in my left ear screaming "what ARE you THINKING?!?!". In front of me were over runs of our new mini decals...for cars, laptops, cell phones, notebooks, etc. and now....MAGNETS! they're sooooo kewl!

What does your pencil holder look like? This is just one of mine. I keep forgetting to turn around. I'm bound to find exactly what I need in one, if not another. I just counted 5 of them on and around my desk. I think I could survive on a desert island with what's in just this one of my "pencil holder" type thingys. Inventory: exacto knife, paint brush sponge, ruler, tweezers, bull clip, 3 spoons, 2 fork, black cord with shell pendant, lip balm, glue stick, drawing pen, glue pen, the ever necessary lip liner, stipple brush, lead pencil, pencil with bumble bee to entertain me, metalic gold paint pen, several ball point pens, orange pencil, several #2 pencils, mini box cutter, mini container of 12g of Tajin "salsa en polvo", and a pokey wooden ceramic tool/cuticle pusher back.

Tattoos meet Bodacious Bangles

Sometimes my attention span is that of a flea. I'm not sure what generation of Bodacious Bangles I'm on, tho this one surprised me! Rubber Stamp Plantation's temporary tattoos! What's being marketed as "water slide transfers", are simply temporary tattoos. How fun is that! They need a good clear coat prior to finishing, tho the bracelets need one anyway! I decided I love the new Luminarte Shimmering Mists so well, that i had to leave a good majority of this batch simply painted. Embellishing seemed to take away from their beauty. They were a hit at the Merrie Monarch Festival Craft Fair.

One of the highlights of my trip to Japan in January was my day with Sadao. Subways, walking, temples, shrines, cookies, mochi, sushi, & washi! I lugged around a 3 foot roll of washi all over the city. At the end of the day, laughed over a beer with Sadao that the washi had quite the walking tour. I should have thought to take photos of it in front of all the sights...kind of like the Travelocity Gnome! next time!

What an amazing adventure. The weather was perfect, a bit overcast, a few drizzles to help fill the waterfalls. Low tide and calm seas early am enabled us to take the boat into the caves. Snorkeling at the old fishing village brought us to a playground of honu (sea turtles), a school of yellow tang so dense, you couldn't see the water! My first time with a white tipped shark.
We were escorted home by a fleet of dolphins playing, spinning, jumping & racing!

I have to stop and tell the chickens and roosters just how pretty they are...Kokee

Sharon Diskin created this amazingly detailed underwater scene with Rubber Stamp Plantation stamps using Twinkling H2Os. She used the maile lei stamp as a sea plant, lehua blossom as a sea sponge, swirl sun for a spider star fish. Starring as themselves...shell honu, coral, sand dollar, etc. She created a similar scene on a cigar box purse.

Akemi and Masai were our hosts for Haunani Cesar's 5 days of Hawaiian Quilting classes. These are some of the students that invited us on a wonderful adventure to an onsen in Hakone. Our 2 day road trip included the Needle Festival, favorite shrines & temples, charcoal eggs...eaten for long life, wood inlay class from a master, and of course...lots of great food, noodles, sake, and Akemi's 50th birthday feast after the roof top onsen...at nite, in the brisk, cold air.

12 of us caravaned in 3 cars up the mountain enroute to the onsens in Hakone. We stopped here...geothermal vents atop the mountain...a shrine for cleansing and the sign for "black eggs"...just in case one needs directions. Black eggs were yum! (hard boiled, or charcoal cooked to "hard boiled"). Eaten to bring another 7 years to your life. Think I ate 3. Yes...that's snow...brrrrr!

The steps to the Temple in old Kamakura. Formerly the capital of Japan, the town is rich in crafts, temples, and culture. Beach community in the summer...definitely the place to hang at the beach and catch a wave or 2.

this was inside the Budha...behind me are Budha's hands. Tai was amazing. He met me at the train station with umbrellas in hand, and guided me through the old city, winding in and out of streets of small specialty shops. Fish shop, bean shop, international and Japanese crafts....and yummy Japanese lunch, yummy beer, and heated floor! Tai wisked me into the yellow pigeon cookie store! WOW! Who knew???

hi there! OMG! everyone is so sweet, helpful! Mary met me at the airport and bought me a suica (train card). we ended up taking the skyliner...reserved seats in the smoking car so i could get the full experience and a minor buzz by the time we arrived at Takadanobaba (Baba). must say, my contacts, along with sinuses rebelled! cold, tho am toasty warm in my fleece ear/collar thang and layers...happy camper! staying at old guest inn (ryokan) fw blocks from the el. train station. Eiko (60, looks 50, if that) just brought in my double futon and feather bed cover. yum. just enuf room for both of our futons on the heated floor mat. Still warm from the spicy chicken curry soup we had with Meg...Mary;s japanese friend (born and raised in Sao Paulo). Her parfait was amazing. 8 in parfait glass with corn flakes, topped with soft ice cream and sweet red beans, more corn flakes, mochi ball, corn flakes, more mini mochi with sesame powder, small scoop of green tea ice cream. more red beans, topped with soft serve swirl and fresh strawberries. aprox 750 y...after all that, a little less that a ft tall! coffee w/cream, outstanding! Meg will meet me at some station tmw to take me to gift show! yippee! rainy, snowy, and stil warm! thanks to Marys perseverence at Savers and Lisas infinite wisdom!

Hand made Pareo (sarongs) with Bozo in Waianae...you gotta try it!

Mary Cesar (Hawaiian Quilter extraordinaire), and I spent the morning with Bozo and friends, creating our own material for pareo (sarong). Bozo is an amazingly beautiful man! He and his family live in Waianae, where he has turned his back yard into his art studio. Pareo...sarong, are his media of choice at present. He gathers native plants in Kahana Valley, near where he grew up in Laie. The material is lovely cotton that takes the photosensitive dye beautifully.

Bozo invites anyone to come to make their own pareo...it's most fun in a small group of 4-8. $45 includes everything!

Hiking the Pauoa Ridge trail with ASL hiking group

Glorious day for a hike with the ASL Club from Kapiolani Communty College & Da Boyz who lead the ASL Hiking Group. I made it 2/3 of the way and took my time coming back, enjoying nature in the kiss of rain mists. Perfect day...and the pups were in heaven. Emily, now 8 going on 6 months, and Andy 11, going on 72 couldn't get enought...tho were clearly pooped at the end!

OMG! More bottle caps. Feeling the pressure to make earrings!

OMG...the bottle caps keep coming. I'm feeling the pressure to keep up with supply! I can flatten at least one cap per red light. I carry my baggie and pliers almost everywhere. Several weeks ago, it was meditation...now it's becoming obsession. Can't quite get the stale beer smell out of them, tho Diamond Glaze works wonders. Seals the smell in! Just another use for DG!

Torn paper technique...turned into cards!

Made cards today from the papers we made at StampClub last week. Laid down double stick tape in horizontal rows. Broke out the baggie of scrap fibers and laid them across the sticky. Cut them with guillotine paper cutter into ATC size pieces! Had no idea there was hope for the papers I created. LOVE them! Will have them for sale at the Hawaii Women Expo this coming weekend at the Blaisdel Exhibition Hall on Ward Ave. Come see us!

OK...it's so friggin' simple! I know it may seem like bragging...I do have to say that making Rubber Stamp Plantation stamps for 20+ years has to count for something. they're deeply etched, clean, clear designs that work great in countless media. Bella made a set of tea towels using our Lauae stamp, an image that I originally carved over 10 years ago. It's still one of our best selling stamps. So universal on paper, embossed, in clay...and here on fabric with acrylic paint! We make an XLG Lauae as well...
Nancy, of Vamp Stamp News, has also used this stamp in several of her rubber stamping tutorials. Be sure to check out her magazine and website.

Visiting Vetiver on Maui-Lahainaluna High School Agriculture Program

Three months ago (end of March '09), Lahainaluna High School Ag students, families and teachers planted rows of vetiver to stabilize the slope that has been flooding the Ag grow houses and benches with every rainy season for years. Vetiver plants are thriving and already doing their job to reduce erosion. We're thrilled to see them happy on the hill!

Don't stop where the road splits in Kula! Stop for coffee at Grandma's Coffee House and keep on going to Ulupalakua Ranch! Jacaranda are in bloom leaving soft blankets of lavender lining the winding road. Turn the AC off and roll down the windows. Eucalyptus trees whistle as your face turns to the sun smelling the breeze. The store is darling...walk around the lanai to see the old Upcountry Maui map on the side wall, and be sure to ask about the old cowboys hanging out...there's a story...
Oh, and the food is really yummy and fresh!

Thank you to everyone who sends me bottle caps. What kind of beer or soda do you drink? Don't throw them away...send them this way! Filming tomorrow for a Joy of Crafting segment that will air mid August, just in time for the Made in Hawaii Festival. Be sure to save the date and stop by. As usual, something fun and festive will be happening at our booth. August 21-23, 2009. We'll be in Booth #219/220 at Neil Blaisdell Center.

The "how to...":
smash bottle cap on both sides with a hammer
pluck out the plastic seal from what used to be the inside. this is perhaps the toughest part.
use a nail, awl, ice pick to hammer a hole as close to the top as you can.
use a 1 inch hole punch to punch out the vintage sticker of your choice.
stick it on the bottle cap.
fill with diamond glaze. let dry overnite. attach beads or just an earing wire!

Stamped Wedding Invitations at the Wedding Expo

Jenny and I were able to create really fresh wedding invitations, place cards, thank you notes, favor boxes, response cards, and more in a monstera motif. We used the medium and small monstera leaf, small and large monstera block, small monstera border, and large monstera panel stamps with kaleidacolor green multi color inkpad and a variety of fine and linen cardstock. Ben Franklin's ACUCUT and die collection was extremely helpful. I just LOVE the color palette!

If you look closely, the "pouch" is made from double sided scapbook paper. die cut or trimmed with fancy scissors, embellished with flowers, 2 square brads, key chain with charm, ribbon, and of course...microscope slide pendant/ornament.

Mike led Stampclub one eve when we were able to create collages between microscope slides. In this one, I used the Fish Stamp, and Vintage Hula girl stickers from our "Aloha from Hawaii" sticker line. On the back I used a few of our postage/cancellation stamps for a "black and white" look.

It's a little fuzzy, tho at least you can get the idea...

Another Bodacious Bangle Bracelet...

I'm soooo addicted! I ordered more blank bangles and went crazy. I painted over 100 with Luminarte's radiant rain daubers...sponging the paints on. A bit of Lumiere paints for a little texture and more bling. This batch o bracelets are chunkier and super yummy! I went all out...sizes sm-xl. Flat, domed, thin to super thick. LOVE them...
I used the Islamic Border stamp, one of my favorites, and finally clear coated the bracelet with Tripple Thick by DecoArt.
Had a hard time giving this one up. Sent 60 to The General Store Gallery & Gift Shop in Kilohana, Lihue Kauai.

We'll be working with really cool "chevron" templates to make divine paper cut bookmarks ( or panels for cards, craft projects, scrapbooking, etc). These look like they're from a museum gift shop! This technique is easily finished...so you'll have a chance to make as many as you like. This is one of the "new" stampclub projects that coordinate with Lorena & Su's monthly "Art with Attitude" swap. However many you contribute, you will receive back!

Didn't these come out great! This was the Craft/Paper Party at Ben Franklin on Paa Street. Folks of all ages made their own Tropical Etch glass block vase/fish tank. The folks at BFS even went to the pet store to grab some beta fish for the tanks! We were sure to give "Quality Care" lessons to ensure the new pet fishies would thrive and be loved! 20 people showed up at Stampclub to help usher in the New Year. We used double matte easel frames that fit 5x7 in photos, and dolled them up with whatever we could find. I love that Stampclub just "happens" 3rd Monday of every month. We always seem to have great volunteer teachers, interesting projects, great food brought by all, and are able to keep it at $5...all materials included.
The best part for me is watching all the embellishments, ephemera, paints, inks, glues, etc be used up!!! Tho I must say the supply seems to be bottomless. Not sure if I really have that much crap (oops...stuff...), or if I just keep collecting.
February, Tammy will be leading us in "Inchies & Twinchies". Su and Lorena will be facilitating a similar swap to follow. Drop off for the one for one swap is Rubber Stamp Plantation (Honolulu) on the last Friday of the Month. Email me if you'd like the swap schedule. We already know what's on the calendar for the next 6 months. Plenty of time to join in!

She has something for every budget, and for every occasion...She also is great at custom orders, including all those party favors you're not sure how to etch yourself. Margie can cusomize your favorite glass platters, champagne flutes, and jelly jars that you want to fill with your Auntie's famous mango chutney recipe. Wow...sorry it's taken so long to post. Decided to take a break for the Holiday Season and focus on friends and family.
Joy, from "Joy of Crafting" invited several of us to film her bi monthly craft show with a LIVE AUDIENCE! It was so much fun, and the guests were treated like royalty!

Tonite at 6pm the biweekly cable TV show, Joy of Crafting, on channel 16 (Oceanic Cable channel 16) will feature Debra Zeleznik (me) from Rubber Stamp Planation (us), making dreidles out of clay! I used the Laua'e fern and islamic border stamps to decorate dreidles I made with self hardening clay. They were surprisingly simple, and not that difficult to get them balanced so they can spin like a top.

Do check out Joy of Crafting...It runs quite a few times during the 2 week period. I'll be featured on the following program in 2 weeks as well.

Tropical Etch Glass Etching Class...Wed 12/10 6-8:30p

Hope you can join us for a (click for details) glass etching workshop Wed. 12/10 at Rubber Stamp Plantation.
David will be facilitating this adventure in one of the easiest and dramatic, up and coming crafts.
All the supplies are included...All the Tropical Etch stencils you can possibly use, in whatever designs you want; picks; etching cream; painter's masking tape, etc.
You bring the glass pieces you want to etch.
For beginners, you can probably get 3-6 pieces completed...for more advanced pieces using multiple stencils..at least 2 or 3. David suggests you bring at least 5 pieces with you (including recycled glass!!!!).
This cobalt glass uses one stencil...and it's super quick and easy. Its a "tile" pattern that we created for use on bathroom tiles. As you can see...all the stencils are versitile. This one also looks great on a square glass platter. BFS is carrying some really nice ones in various sizes these days. When I get one done, I'll post a photo.
Meanwhile, you can catch more samples of glass we've etched on our new Tropical Etch gallery.

"Happy Thanksgiving" from Bucky and Nani in Pa'auilo, Big Island

"HAPPY THANKSGIVING" says Bucky the llama! His sister Nani also wishes you a wonderful Holiday! They are so grateful to be living up on the mountain on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii...in Pa'auilo. They live where wild turkey flocks high tail it thru their pasture, baiting Copper to come for a chase. Bucky's a little shy, tho loves his carrots. Nani is just pure love!
Be sure to see their humans' amazing artwork at the Annual Thanksgiving Studio Sale in Volcano this weekend. It really is not to be missed. All of the galleries, and artist studios open their spaces for you to perouse and purchase all your hand made holiday gifts. On the Big Island for 5 days, I headed south to Kalapana with Zeke. We were on our way to buy goodies for our stores from a woman who imports from Indonesia. This is where we turned left. To the right of the sign was the lava flow that you can hike out to. After sunset you can see the red glow falling into the ocean.

So our Synagogue, Temple Emanu-El, had their first Chanukah & Chaliday Craft Fair yesterday. The day was gorgeous with light trades...a perfect day for a Hawaiian craft Fair.

I arrived on Maui, Monday for a wholesale trade show. While waiting for check-in...2 of us hopped into my very full truck (we came over on the Superferry), and headed up the Mountain (Haleakela...which has a crater the size of Manhattan at the top) to visit the Kula Lavender Farm. It was exquisite! I'll post photos and put in links when I return this weekend. I bought huge bouquets of Protea flowers for only $10...Lavender flower season is over, tho the protea are in full bloom. I returned today, after the show to buy as many as is could to bring back for friends!
I also drove through the pastures past Kula and Keokea to meet with Diane and Mike at Ulapalakua Ranch Store, which dates back to the 1880's. They had invited me to lunch, tho arrived a bit late because I was so distracted along the way.

Hope you'll take time for Upcountry Maui when on island next!
